Unit 4201
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.03-5 x 2.70 long x 60cm deep
Discussion: This infill layer between walls 400 + 414 runs n-s, and there are thin traces of it curving around to the west, paralell with wall 299 on wall 78. It was more or less of uniform thickness (~5cm) but became thinner as it came down upon the under-lying wall so that it is 60cm deep. The infill material was consistent throughout - grey flecky, gritty material with chunks of brown clayey-silty stuff, and small flecks of charcoal. the interface of the infill with wall 414 was much easier to find than with wall 400, where it was strongly bonded to the wall.
Recognition: grey-brown layer with inclusions (white interface with wall 414), infill between wall 414 and wall 400
Definition: south - removed by wall machine 1996, west - edge of wall 400, north - curves around to west
Execution: trowel / small pick
Condition: good
Consistency: baked hard - so firm but brittle
Colour: grey-brown, chunks of more orange-brown material (clayey) and areas of more grey-brown
Texture: sandy-silt loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: charcoal 2-5% very small flecks 1-4mm, tiny gritty inclusions - grey in colour, give rough texture, very few chunks of white-beige plaster 2cm cubed, tiny lumps of hard clayey material 0.5m cubed - (very hard)
Post-depositional Features: salty interface
Basal Boundary: abrupt, distinct, smooth, n-s going downwards

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
