Unit 4224
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: wall addition
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 4.53m E-W x 0.13m N-S. Max depth 0.39m
Discussion: (4224) Appeared to be an eroded remnant of a wall repair, originally attached to the north face of wall F299, that over time had split away. It consisted of a compact, slightly sandy, silt material approx 0.13m wide where least eroded. Attatced to this on the northern side was a partly surviving plaster skim - (4264) with an avarage thickness of 0.01m though there were occasional fragments 0.02 - 0.04m thick. The max depth of (4224) was 0.39m, a rough avarage being 0.30m. I understand that the plaster skim would have been on the outside of wall F299, which raises questions about the assumption that only inside walls were plastered. However, there was no evidence of many applications - the plaster was a single deposit. Perhaps part of construction between F.299 and the wall to the north.
Recognition: Upstanding deposit, "pulled away" from wall F299 to yhe norht of F299
