Interpretive Categories: brick and mortar, levelling layer

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 60cm by 36cm by 15cm

Discussion: At first I thought that this was the southern continuation of wall 400 as it was very level, roughly the same width and was comprised largely of bricky material identical to wall 400 bricks. However, on excavating the deposit it was discovered to be a mixture of unstructured massive material so was reinterpreted as a levelling layer.

29/6 In section this is clearly seen as brick and mortar, therefore Lucy's original interpretation of more base of wall 400 holds. Relationships have been amended accordingly. SF

Recognition: levelling layer south of south edge of wall 400. Continues the gentle southward gradient of the base of wall 400. Contains a lot of bricky inclusions.

Definition: south: limit of excavation, west: infill, north: fill under wall 400 and last course of brick in wall 400, east: fill 4190.

Execution: trowel and mattock

Condition: very hard and dried

Consistency: fairly compact although slightly soft

Colour: brick inclusions:mid brown, beige plaster inclusions a few dark brown patches, white flecks

Texture: clayey silt

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: more than 50% bricky sandy-clayey silt, small stones less than 2%, small fragments of charcoal, a few whole clay balls.

Post-depositional Features: none

Basal Boundary: anthropogenic, possibly constructional, fairly prominent contrast, distinct, smooth, slopes down to the south.
