Unit 4491
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Dimensions: 2.20m EW, 0.44m NS, from 0.34m to 0.08m deep.
Description: The top fill of the wall 497
Discussion: It was clearly visible from south facing section. We have noticed that it is connected to the midden in the North. After removing the 4490 fill, we have reached the midden which was very rich about organic residue, phytolits, charcoal, bone etc. and after the removing of 4491 midden, we have seen the Northern edge of the wall 497.
Recognition: A fill consist of ash, charcoal and organic residue.
Definition: Clearly visible with its soft and ashy texture.
Execution: Trowel, hand pick.
Condition: Wet-soft
Consistency: Soft and friable.
Colour: Grey and black dotts.
Texture: Sandy/silty clay (clay %60)
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Charcoal %10-%20, ash, bone, teeth %5, small and flecks of obsidian %2, organic residues, phytolits %50 (very thin layer).
Post-depositional Features: Natural salts < %2.
Basal Boundary: Clear, wavy anthropic boundry.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Spit from midden in space 115 (?) below 4121. A small corner of this was taken off to figure out sequence of walls. 4mm, flotation sample #2, 100% sorted was completely recorded at a later date. The material from this sample was dominated by non-identifiable fragments mostly under 1cm in size and from sheep-sized animals. Also present were some long bone splinters, rib and skull fragments. The few pieces identifiable to element show the presence of caprines and equids. A very high percentage of the bone has been digested. Suggesting that it could be an area to which dogs had considerable access. 4mm, flotation sample #3, 100% sorted was just recorded for diagnostics but there weren't any. In general the material was well fragmented and digested and very similar to sample #2. A cattle scapula (F1) was recorded in 1999. The remainder of the dry sieved material assessed in 2009 (NR). It is strikingly different from the flotation samples, suggesting some screening issues. While there is some sheep-size, it is dominated by large mammals (cattle and equid - 2 sizes). There are a few weathered pieces, but most surfaces are fresh. There is very little digestion and burning (mostly low temperature), and even less gnawing. Body part distribution is fairly even, although cattle horn core seems sparse. Equid is more common than typical, about even with the cattle. There are several large pieces, but this probably does not rise to a feasting deposit. Mandibles indicate the presence of both juvenile and aged sheep/goat. There is an oddly worn distal cattle metatarsal: the shaft is weathered, and the condyles heavily worn so as to remove the verticillus completely all the way around. It is hard to see how trample would do this (vs. just on one side or front and back; the distal end is likewise worn), but there is no indication of working. May have been used for some obscure purpose. A coprolite fragment was pulled. Altogether, it seems like midden, with some parts rapidly buried and others perhaps lying exposed for a while. Since the sheep/goat and sheep-size seems more processed/fragmented than the large mammal, it is possible that it includes some feasting remains, but these are not coherent enough to be compelling. There is a chunk, but a long way from complete, of a right cattle scapula that conceivably goes with F1. One artifact is present, a fragment of a rib point (unusual). Rough DZ count (dry-sieved only, not counting F1): Bos - 5; equid (mostly horse) - 5; O/C - 6.5Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
