Unit 4710
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: accumulation,stabling deposit
Data Category Information: Description: penning; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 4.6m+ w-e, 1.8m+ n=s, 0.02 to 0.06m thick
Discussion: Series of thin bands. Some 'phytolith' bands, some coprolite like spreads, some clay bands. Looks like deliberate laying of clay bands and spreading of straw like material then accumulations of organic material, coprolite etc. North - South extent unknown but built up against wall F.469 and continues under wall F.467. Looks to be a stabling type deposit used for some time - at least three phases? years. No sign of rain etc so probably covered by some kind of roof. This can probably be equated with Mellaart's 'brown humus' layer. Stabling probably only one of a number of different ?seasonal? uses. 'Stabling' may have unfortunate implications, simply means presence of animals for some time.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot sample 2776 2777 The top spit from the 'stabling' deposit in space 181. NOT an arbitrary layer, but may be a group of thin layers. The flotation samples are taken on a 1 metre grid running east -west. There are a few bones from dry sieving the rest of the material is from flotation. The material is a fairly uniform medium brown with a small amount of bird bone and a two tiny burnt pieces. in sample 2776 there is one large fragment of an 07 tibia, an equid carpal and a piece of Bos horn core. Fragment size is very large for 'fill' and the sample is very clean with a low density of small fragments. There is a much lower density of the small '117' type of fragments usually found in fill or dirty floors. 4mm flotation sample #3, 100% sorted was recorded at a later date and contained both 03 and 07 size fragments. Also present was an upper tooth of a hedgehog. Lats number = 34 Lats number = 32Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
