Dimensions: 0.8m (E-W), 0.55m (N-S), 0.06m deep 

Discussion: (4768) was the partially burnt/baked deposit of material that provided the base for the earlier period of use of the oven (F524). Its surface was baked hard in places, particularly to the north west where the entrance to the oven appears to have been. 

Consistency: friable 

Colour: rich reddish brown (where scorched), otherwise greyish brown 

Texture: clayey silt 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: <2% charcoal, tiny pebbles, plaster and ash 

Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation 

Basal Boundary: sharp, distinct and smooth. It sloped predominantly from west to east and on all sides towards the centre of the cut for the hearth
