Dimensions: 0.27m (E-W), 0.33m (N-S), 0.06m deep 

 

Discussion: 4962 was made up of the two earlier oven bases of F534, both of which were covered with a thin skim of ash. They were thicker and more burnt than the later oven bases (4960), and baked to a hard yellow crust at the centre but were otherwise very similar. They represent the earliest use of oven F534 and are probably contemporary to someof the floors contained in unit 4978. 

 

Consistency: friable, but baked hard on the upper surface 

Colour: deep reddish-brown beneath, with a baked orange surface, covered with a skim of pale grey ash 

Texture: silt 

Bedding: compound layered 

Inclusions: flecks of charcoal, burnt clay, ash, plaster, shell and obsidian 

Post-depositional Features: none 

Basal Boundary: sharp and distinct, sloping steeply on all sides to form a bowl-like shape
