Unit 5521

Category: Layer    dug in 2002

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: midden,pit fill

Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded

Dimensions: 1.4 x 1.5 m

Discussion: this layer was initially thought as pit fill as it peeled off to a burnt layer that dropped to the N. As excavation continued (wchich was done by |Hussein and Sinan) this burnt layer diffused and the borders of the whole context kind of disappeard so I gave it an arbitrary border to the N.
This taught me again probably for the 5th time that following midden deposits are very difficult and the blending that happens between different contexts makes it difficult to see exact boundaries between them

Recognition: this was recognized as a pit fill that was beneath 5520, differentiated with maybe a bit more finds within the matrix.

Definition: defined by the trench walls, late intrusion to the S and not really clear towards the N

Execution: trowel

Condition: moist from rain

Consistency: moderate

Colour: greyish brown

Texture: silty clay loam

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: salt concretions, bits of charcoal, ash, bone, pottery, obsidian, some building material (plaster, --, clay, etc) pretty much like a midden context

Post-depositional Features: animal, insect, root activity

Basal Boundary: sharp to the S, peeling off to a burnt level, but as the context goes to the N, this burning level disappears and it gets blended with the midden deposits to the N
