Unit 5538
Category: Layer dug in 2002
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Dimensions: 3.5 x 1.5, 3 x 1.5 m
Discussion: The boundary with this layer and 5521 is not that clear in the first place. I started taking 5521 out because it pealed off to a nice burnt deposit. Next to 5521 is this layer that seems to be earlier in deposition, but I am not sure. The midden type depositis variable in its own. Some areas are clearly formed by pudding with high proportions of sand (very neatly layered as thin lenses). And in some places there is more ash and plaster and charcoal. The general stratigraphy is a bit dificult to work out. I am happy than things will become clear as I go down and as I see more from the sections.
Recognition: recognized as the continuation of midden deposits below 5520,
Definition: defined by trench walls and an arbitrary cut by -- to the S
Execution: trowel, mattock
Condition: dry
Consistency: loose in general, firm at the inner corner where the deposit seems to have been formed by pudding
Colour: dark greyish brown matrix with orange splatches (clays), white splotches (plaster), brown sploches (silty clay), black sploches (ash)
Texture: sandy silt to siltyclay
Bedding: layered
Inclusions: ash, charcoal, phytoliths, plaster chunks, mb chunks, bone, pot, obsidian, basically everything you need to make the place a midden
Post-depositional Features: animal, insect, plant activity
Basal Boundary: arbitrary

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
