Discussion: Photo: (1)Floor Fill Interface, (2)Scapula in Fill, (3)Scapula w/fill removed, (4)after scapula removal
Removal of floor to earlier floor. NE corner comes down to area of fill distinctively abutting lower floor surface; under 2cm of this fill is a scapula that appears to be supporting the fill as it approaches the pit edge. In the SW corner there has been exposed a depression in the floor that is filled with a higher amount of burnt ashy materials. Scapula removed and below it was a layer of clay clayey material covered by salts. To the west of the scapula was a fragment of plaster (part of bench?) used to fill the area below previous floor taken as sample 8. Sample 7 was also a packing material of a different sort-browner clay. Obsidian fragments seemed to be on floor just below packing (X:2-4)

Unit description: The only bone from the dry sieve was two cattle scapulae recorded as X1 in the field and X1 and F1 in this database. NR 2003: Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. It is a smallish sample of smallish pieces ranging up to 3-4 cm. Some are burnt, some digested, and most are quite fresh. Most are sheep-size. There is some integrity, with several bits from a quite young sheep/goat. This looks like something that has caught the remains of daily activities left behind after sweeping, or at least after dumping. Perhaps a sweepings unit, a hollow, or maybe construction material prepared from clean sediment where it would catch some bits of fresh material. Given the digested bone, this last seems most likely.
