Discussion: Bones of carnivore + sheep/goat found during the cleaning in building 10 along the western edge of building 10, just east of wall F104. It is possible that these bones are associated with a platform that is abutting wall F104 but this cannot be determined fully until this area has been excavated. The decision was taken to remove the exposed bones, give them a unit number, record their location and try to tie them into a context when the area is eventually excavated.

The location of these bones can be seen on plan 03/501. It is possible that they may in some way be associated with fragments of pottery in the immediate vicinity.

Risa, the on-site zooarchaeologist, together with Louise Martin, has identified the carnivore bones to be wolf and the bones are from the paw. Further wolf paw bones were found by Risa whilst going through finds associated with the cleaning context (unit 5889) and these are most likely associated with the bones designated to this unit number.

Additional entry 10/08/03:

Through further cleaning more artifacts have come to light (see sketch on unit sheet). It would seem that they are sitting in platform 1314 - in its NW corner. Just beyond these artifacts are a series of platform extensions to platform 1314. It is not possible to say whether these artifacts are sitting in cut fill or whether they were incorporated into the bench in another manner. These finds have been given x-numbers (X1-X8) and planned (see plan 03/561). Only loose finds were taken - the rest left for next season). A new series of photographs were also taken.

NOTE: Samples S1 and S2 were taken from inside pot base X1. These samples reflect different material within the pot base (Microexcavated in conservation lab by BG). Conservation laboratory number 03.079
