Discussion: Fill of a cut partially (or mostly) excavated in 2000 as unit 6305 in northern most part of sp. 158. We found large chunks of what looks like the floor of an oven. Perhaps it was redeposited in this squarish pit in the N. end of sp. 158 after it was no longer in use. The stratigraphy of this unit is very complicated and seems to be a jumble of dumped material- chunks of burned clay (orange) and ash and packing and some whitish yellow clay material. The pit seems to go on forever and we are taking occasional photos to document its stages. I came down to what we are desiginating the basal boundary of the pit. However, it appears to go under the red plaster wall and the rest of the pit seems to extend much further (west and south) than we had anticipated from the cut. So, we are going to cover it and wait to understand relationships once the wall has been taken out. The basal boundary lies directly below a layer of jumbled hard orange baked clay and wet yellowish clay. It is a white ashy surface that is fairly thin. It has abundant shell and shte shell is often the indicator that the boundary has been reached. The orange baked clay materialis what we think is the remains of a redeposited oven. Pedja is currently working on F. 604 which has very similar orange hard clay material. It is a possibility that F. 604 or a similar feature was redeposited into this pit.
