Unit 8614
Category: layer dug in 2003
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: rim and bottom of bin (?)
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: In order to define the relationship between F. 1015 (bin?) and the surrounding space, i. e. floors revealed when unit 8608 was removed (sequence of 3 floors and 4 packings), we excavated the rim and the probable base of it. The rim consisted of layers of soils of various colours - red, orange, black - and was almost rectangular in shape; its west and south sides were attached to the wall bricks (no plaster between). The base of the rim is truncated, probably because it lies on a surface that sloped southwards. Below it there is a deposit of midden material (ash, soot, charcoal, phytoliths, gypsum) that stretches beyond the rim of the bin and goes underneath the floor and the packing around the bin.
When we finished the unit it became clear that the layer of orange soil at the base of the bin is earlier than the surrounding floors reached after unit 8608 was excavated. That is why we'll stop digging at that point and our next task will be to remove the floor of white plaster around the bin.
