Unit 10216
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: grave fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 1.70 m E-W x 0.45m N-S
Discussion: Grave fill defined by boundary of preserved wood rectangle. Originally we believed this to be a coffin, but due to the depth and the lack of wood paneling all around, Doru thinks it is a wood-lined grave pit and I agree. Fill varies in color and consistency from compact clay soil that is light brown/gray to loose dark brown and loose dark reddish brown. Small patches of plaster and salt throughout. I think the loose dark reddish brown soil is disintegrated wood lining. Root disturbance (small) and rodent disturbance present. Rodent burrowing under the pelvis and near the skull. Inclusions in the fill are obsidian, lithics, shell, charcoal, funeral bones, pottery and wood. The basal boundary was distinguised by small bits of wood, but otherwise was very homogenous with grave fill.
Recognition: soil inside wooden coffin, outline light brownish grey
Definition: within wooden coffin
Execution: trowel, handpick, wooden tools by the skeleton
Condition: very dry
Consistency: varies from soft/friable to firm
Colour: light brown/gray - several areas are reddish brown

Post-depositional Features: small amount of wood, animal disturbance
Basal Boundary: lined with wood, not very distinct - basal boundary region recognized by end of skeleton
