Unit 10218
Category: Cluster dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: wood coffin
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Material: wood; Deposition: primary deposition; Basal Spit: nails
Discussion: The wood ''coffin'' appears to be a grave lining instead of an actual coffin. Doru made this suggestion and I agree, since most of the Byzantine burials are simply lined with ceramic tiles and it would follow that they used wood as well. Further evidence in support of this hypothesis is the absence of eastern and western woods sides (at the head and feet of the skeleton) and the presence of two wooden posts inside of the wood planks, just above the pelvis. Only a few nails were recovered ( 2 or 3 ) as well. It appears as through the bottom was lined, but the preservation was not as good beneath the skeleton. The wood planks are approximately 1 cm in width. The wood was well preserved and several wood samples were taken.
