Unit 1063
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: ?building fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 3.4 x 1.0 x 0.1-0.2m
Discussion: Some indication of cut within building fill marked by more heterogeneous lumpy fill (as defined by semi circle on unit sheet sketch). Investigation failed to define this further and it represents some kind of differentiation within the fill here. (1063) was then extended as a further arbitrary layer beneath (1053). The western section, though dry and indistinct appears to show some layering or lensing within the fill sloping down from south to north. To east lower part of this arbitrary layer runs under wall. A large bone protruding 1-2 cms into east wall ( in packing between courses of bricks) was part of equid pelvis. Not a wall 'fitting' but possibly deliberately placed during backfill? 0.55m south of NE corner of trench height: 1006.38
Execution: hand (pick and trowel)
Condition: warm and sunny
Consistency: firm / compact but friable or loose patches, particularly around the 'edges' of putative cut
Colour: 10YR 4/2 - 5/2 (dark greyish brown)
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: Massive but not homogenous
Inclusions: c2% charcoal < 20mm, c5% distinct lumps of mudbrick < c100mm, < 2% plaster fragments, <2%thin flat lumps of possible coprolite
Post-depositional Features: moderate roots and burrows, especially by wall to the east.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
