Unit 1066
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: Ash an charcoal dump, presumably derived from a domestic hearth or oven. Dump part of midden deposit sloping of to the south west from the north. Deposit also more mixed with a concentration of larger inclusions in its lower extent, with lighter more ashy material at the upper extent. The soft friable nature of the deposit also suggests rapid sealing by dump 1064 above, otherwise if open to the elements for any length of time considerable erosion may have occurred.
Execution: trowel
Condition: dry
Consistency: loose
Colour: 5yr 2.5/1 black
Texture: ashy loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: >10% charcoal, <2% pottery , shell, bone, marl, chalk/plaster, stone
Post-depositional Features: possibly rapidly sealed otherwise would have rapidly weathered if exposed
Basal Boundary: dumped, prominent to north distinct to south

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: F 55 subsampled for ZooMS (DCO 2014)
1066 is described as an ash/charcoal dump possibly from a domestic oven or hearth, which was probably buried rapidly. A moderate amount of bone was recovered from this context, about 2-3% of which was burnt to low temperatures. Weathering, dog gnawed and digested bone are all minimal agreeing with the interpretation that the material was covered fairly rapidly. Sheep/goat, equid and cattle are all present in the material from the dry sieve with caprine bones being the most common. Larger pieces of bone are quite rare, with the exception of a half-complete scapula from a large cow. Caprines are represented by fragmented piece of maxilla and mandible, along with the occasional post-cranial element. The 4mm flotation sample #1 and #2 and an additional bag of 4mm material with no sample number were recorded for diagnostics only. The bones were in similar condition to those from the dry sieve with little weathering or digestion. There was, however, a higher proportion of burnt bone (15-20%)and more appears to come from 003 sized animals. In all the samples fish bones were very frequent and there was even the occasional burnt one. The material from this unit could well be from or surrounding a domestic hearth with the occasional larger element maybe added to the dump. Particularly interesting is the large quantity of fish bone, especially if is associated with a hearth deposit. Last number = 73Figurine Records: Yes
