Discussion: Skeleton 10829 represent a more or less complete and articulated skeleton, whose bones are in a rather poor condition. This complicated excavation and lifting considerably. Preliminairy obeservations in the field suggest we are dealing with an adult (bones were fused) gracile female (observation on the left sciatic notch). The skull, the right scapula and right occitipal were damaged, probably partly due to prolonged exposure in the section across space 112 left in 1997 (when the southern part of the room was excavated).

The body is tightly flexed into a space of about 65 by 30 cms. What remains of the skull is located in the south, whereas the pelvis is at the opposite end. The skeleton was put on the right side. The legs are drawn up in flexed manner in front of the chest, while the arm exted along the body to the towards the pelvis.

Many artifact were found with this skeleton. Those that were found in the vicinity of the skeleton, but not in direct association with the skeleton were assigned to the burial fill (unit 10833), whereas those found with the skeleton were collected as x finds with the skeleton unit. 16 objects were recorded in this manner. These included three incised boar tusks found on the upper chest (x1-3) and perhaps sewn to a garment (Rebecca Daly), and in the same location a string of stone beads (x11-x16; 11-14 below right zygomatic)) and some bone beads (x9-10, above right mandible). Other bone beads were found near the right ankle (x4-8).

In terms of stratigraphy the following relation exist with skeleton 10813 to the east. The right knee of 10829 was slightly separated by the skull of 10813 which overlies it, and the right tibia of 10829 extends below the skull of 10813. Thus it is clear that skeleton 10813 (burial feature 1709) was put in after 10829 (burial feature 1710).

No cut could be defined for this burial. An arbitrary cut (unit 10832) was assigned that is defined by the extent of skeleton 10829. The soil from this arbitrary fill was designated 10833. The skeleton 10829, arbitrary cut 10832 and arbitrary fill 10833 are brought together in feature 1710.

NB no soil was wet sieved or sampled, as space 112 was excavated as a fast track area.

X and Y of Targets: Target A - X: 911.5; Target A - Y: 981.5; Target B - X: 913.25; Target B - Y: 981.5; Target C - X: 0; Target C - Y: 0; Target D - X: 0; Target D - Y: 0

Body: body is tightly flexed and on the right side

Head: head is placed to the south and runs into the 1997 profile

Right Arm: right forearm is above the femoral head and left tibia, and the right hand is above the left foot. Right humerus is over the right femur and arm is straight.

Left Arm: Left arm is bent so that the humerus and forearm are paralel, the elbow is on left pubis tucked under sacrum. Forearm extends under left femur.

Right Leg: right leg is bent so that the knee is at the half anf foot is at right ischium below the left foot. Right toes were curled up underneath the body so that they were paralel with the right tibia.

Left Leg: left femur is upper most bone, extends upwards towards cranium so that the knee is there. Left tibia is paralel and goes down so that the foot is at the left ischium. There was a sesamoid at the distant left metatarsal.

Other comments: skeleton was visible from the 1997 section running through space 112. Burial cut defined on arbitrary basis.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
