Unit 1283
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Room fill layer above a floor. Floor layer quite distinct in NE area of unit near wall, also grey-white in colour; above layer of deposit broke away easily with pick. In SW, & west near balk, no obvious floor layer uncovered so abandoned; deposit here harder and like clay.
Section in south of unit & near wall contains plaster features, bricks in section wall and a disruptive animal hole through. Again this has been abandoned until balks around removed. and hopefully clearer picture will emerge.
Execution: Trowel and pick
Consistency: Moderately firm
Colour: 10 YR 5/4
Texture: Sandy loam
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Natural aggregates of soil, small pieces of charcoal; calcitic plant remains, bits of plaster
Post-depositional Features: Bioturbation by roots, salts, along roots
Basal Boundary: Distinct between floor in NE part. No obvious distinction in SW.

Unit description: Very small unit. One largish fragment of sheep skull, otherwise just a couple of scraps of sheep-size bone and a cattle (?) tooth root. No burning, some manganese staining, light brown color. Sample 9 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Moderate size sample. Majority is sheep-size, but more large mammal than usual, and some fairly big pieces. For small amount, relatively even body part distribution, although no vertebrae or feet. Fair amount of burning, little or no digestion. Weathering variable. A few antler crumbles. A bit of fish and microfauna. No coherence; looks like dirty fill. What happened to samples 3 and 6 flotation? Last number = 38Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
