Discussion: First identified this compound layer towards the end of our attempt to find pit edges cut through midden. Identified as a major tip line near the top of the midden-distinguished by a light grey layer with a dark burnt band at the base. We took took this and the midden above as (12980)- we had partially excavated this deposit with (12971)-didn’t excavate any further but returned to this layer(s) today (4/7/06) and continued. (12980) consists of a relatively thivk (c.10cm) grey clayey silyt layer on top, with a mixed layer below with ash, burning , greenish yellow sandy silt from the layer below and frequent animal bone, also moderate to freq large sherds of pot and stones. Not sure how to interperate -other than as part of midden, but some in situ-activity here?
Recognition: Appears as a tip line as we were excavating what appeared to be a pit cut by the late foundation trench
