Unit 13489
Category: Layer dug in 2006
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: secondary fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Layer is the top fill of a pit. The fill was quite loose and was a dark grey colour. It contained domestic waste material, but lacked the classic midden like appearance of other midden layers seen else where in the 4040 area and also the south shelter (S261), so not thought of as a midden layer in this regard. The layer contained a charcoal element towards the base of the layer, which originally was thought to represent the beginning of a new layer, but more likely this is attributed to post depositional sorting. The layer also contained some rubbly patches, probably derived from redeposition of broken wall material that was removed by the cutting of the pit. These areas were predominantly located to the north and south of the excavated area of the pit.
Formation wise the layer has the appearance of a secondary fill deriving from local landscape erosion in combination with domestic refuse dumping. Its dark appearance may be from a degraded charcoal element. Finds recovered from the layer range from Neolithic to Byzantine.
