Unit 13495
Category: Cut dug in 2006
Area: North
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Discussion: Pit like feature. There is a compacted clay component in the base of the pit derived from primary reworking of the layer beneath probably in association with standing water. This suggests that the pit was left open directly after construction. Initial function of the pit is not clear. Perhaps a quarry function is possible, though the pit is quite shallow. Secondary function seems clearer as layer (13494), seems to point to domestic waste dumping.
Dating of the pit: finds from layer point to Byzantine/Roman date.
