Unit 14611
Category: Cut dug in 2006
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: post retrieval pit
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Discussion: Well defined cut through floors of B59, truncates hearth on W side and partition wall to N. Elongated irregular oval plan with steep sides, undercut in places, occ irregular change in slope.
Base appears to have three distinct parts, two concave dips to north (one oval, to north, the other more circular to middle), the southern part fairly flat. These variations are mirrored in the surface plan with circular part to south, a more irregular and widened centre and again rounded at north.
A N/S wall (plastered) is visible in N side and base and turns west approx half way along, presumably belongs to building below.
The function of this pit is assumed to be for retrieval of a post. The south part looked like this in plan with the northern part for some other function. However form of this feature suggests that it contained three posts! The three distinct sections of the base and top all a similar depth. The wall showing in the side and base (belonging to the lower building) is severely truncated, why would this be so if not for a reason , it would be hard to dig.
So if this pit contained three posts, probably quite substantial posts this suggests a quite substantial structure. (maybe an extra storey) Additionally these three posts, recovered at same time so presumably in situ at same time, would create quite a division between Sp311 to east and Sp313 to west with both hearth and oven!
