Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous

Description: For brick and mortar description, see section Mell 34 and 96/60

Discussion: North-South party wall - space 107 to West and 106 to East. To the North, the wall is associated with cut filled by 1561. The fill was continuous with the wall, but no obvious bricks were visible. Possibly a clayey consolidation for the load bearing corner of the structure, or a foundation deposit cut because it contained an equid scapula! To the South the wall stepped down, probably terracing down or for consolidation in soft midden deposits. No North-South cut was found, but considering wall 51 to the West has very shallow and narrow cuts, we may have missed the cuts for this wall. Contains feature 62, an opening later blocked and represented by feature 59. Therefore, at one phase, spaces 106 and 107 were interlinked, later blocked as separate units. Unit description: This is the contents of a foundation trench below a wall dividing spaces 106 and 107. This trench had an equid scapula that may be a foundation deposit: 1561.X1. So this would be the matrix of this possible special deposit. It does not look particularly unusual, but like a bit of redeposited midden. It is a moderate sized unit, with almost as much large mammal as sheep-size. Taxa include sheep/goat, cattle and equid in roughly equal amounts, dog, fox, a bit of bird, and one probably amphibian long bone shaft. Body part distribution is fairly even, but pelvis is totally lacking. Range of ages in the more frequent taxa. Surface condition is somewhat variable: none is very fresh, but some are in quite good shape while others are more worn. Very little burning, a little gnawing, some digestion. Fragmentation is moderate, with some fairly large fragtments. There is a fragment of a repaired needle. No flotation sample that we can find. Rough DZ count: O/C - 5.5, Bos - 1.5, Equus - 2 (MNI= 2), Vulpes - .2 Only measurable, worked, and bird bone recorded.
