Unit 15355
Category: Layer dug in 2011
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: fill of post-Neolithic pit
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: The unit was recognised in the section south of Space 454, it was unclear in plan. The soil was full of inclusions - artefacts and different sorts of material including charcoal and lime. The southeast corner appeared to have another pit cutting in this pit, where the possible coin was discovered, there was a pottery concentration and where there was a charcoal line defining a change in soil colour from greyish brown to yellow in the southeast. Further down, near the base, the whole southern edge had many layers of different fills including charcoal, lime and an orange material. It was later discovered beneath this a line of Byzantine mud bricks that stretches from the eastern to western side of the pit. It is thought to be a burial. Excavation of this unit finished as the burial was discovered, along with a clearly defined edge of the fill of the pit over Space 454 which was half excavated last year. A piece of worked bone and a piece of metal was found directly above or even within the mud brick layer of the burial.
