Unit 1644
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: fill of small cut
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.42m x 0.10m x 0.3m
Discussion: This was a shallow skim 50-100mm, but slightly over-dug into wall behind. The fill was an homogeneous deposit of mixed clayey silt with charcoal flecks, phytoliths, clay etc., very similar to infill below (). Represents a small cut of unknown function. Was it filling a hollow in the wall face at time of construction of wall 61, or was it associated with a later wall construction that Mellaart took off?
Execution: trowel
Condition: morning light , damp after rain.
Consistency: moderately weak (due to dampness?)
Colour: 2.5Y 4/3-4/4 (olive brown)
Texture: clayey silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 5% white flecks (<2mm); 5% charcoal (>3mm); 2% plaster frags. (>6mm); 5% orange clay frags. (>2mm); 10% phytolith voids (>3mm)
