Unit 1658
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Discussion: White flaky extensive deposit overlying burning. I now think Mellaart whacked a big hole through the floor in search of 'burials' leaving areas by the walls including the central 'L' shaped wall by the oven, and what I'm taking off is the soil that slumped or drifted back in fairly soon afterwards. It's made of plaster, bricky stuff, and silty matrix - lots of plaster in layers but not 'in situ' (c20 - 30%). The height of the underlying 'walls' fooled us into thinking Mellaart stopped at that level, whereas he actually dug down beside the internal 'walls'.
Execution: NSH
Consistency: weak to quite strong
Colour: Too mixed - mid brown to pale greeny plaster.
Texture: Mixed silt loam to clay
Bedding: Layered, mixed
Inclusions: Occasional moderate obsidian; occasional clay ball, occasional small bone, a piece of red painted plaster; occasional human phalanges; occasional medium stone.
Post-depositional Features: possibly trodden or water lain in several episodes - possibly both!
Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic/ accidental? Generally distinct
