Unit 1683
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: mortar + brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 83 x 36 cm, 46cm thick
Description: 1. Brick, 2. Mortar
Discussion: Note: - no transit (level?) available so we have taken measurements up into unit 1683 from its base. (i.e. top of unit below) whose elevation can be measured later.
This is a wall section that comprises 4 layers of mortar + 4layers of brick. Each layer has a clear line but not always continuous or regular block shaped (contrast to double wall to its east) this section of the wall, however clearly distinct from the wall section under neath. This wall section is the upper middle section of wall feature 76.
We removed it by brick ,then mortar, e.g.. remove brick 1 (all to flotation), then mortar (1/2 of flot). (Dusan's observation) mortar curls up around outer edge of brick 1. Brick and mortar are curling around to form corner, makes me think that this is very likely that bricks are made in situ (Miriam 's observation).Dusan thinks to take off white bricks
