Unit 1692

Area: South

Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: coarsely bedded (dumps)
Dimensions: 4.55 M EW x 3.30 m NS
Discussion: A layer of building rubble, bricks, mortar , stone, wall plaster. The building material appears to have tipped in from the North. The mortar is found in smaller lumps and less frequently towards the south. A large concentration of mortar was found in the north west corner of the area where a square patch of slightly creamy-coloured mortar was found. The mortar appears to be still attached or directly-fallen off the North wall in places and I (MLA) felt that at least part of this layer is comprised of collapse from the North wall. However, that layer also contains bricks of a different composition to make visible in the North wall [64]. The upper part of the wall could have been built of this different type of bricks, or the bricks could haven been from the South wall no longer surviving at this height, or the west wall (not located yet) or redeposited from elsewhere.
