Discussion: This unit was described as room fill above the floor or surface found at the base of space 454. However, its definition was ambiguous and was mostly separated from the above pit fill (F.3331/U.16928) by upper unit "peeling" off the lower unit indicating two different levels. It is possible that it is just a more compacted layer at the base of the pit, but there were very few finds in this unit - though obviously this maybe because it was not very deep. Because the definition was ambiguous no top levels for this unit were taken since these levels were not clear. However, the unit was only 5cm deep, though in general much thinner to the northern side. What causes the "peeling" effect is uncertain though it is likely to be the distinction between the two deposits, separated by enough time to compact the lower layer; this could be the definition between the late pit and the original room fill or this layer might even be a walking / trempled surface of room fill over potential floor underneath (16932).
The samples taken from this unit came from the whole area since the layer was so shallow. A second collection was made when the unit was understood more clearly in the hope of obtaining a less contaminated sample.
