Dimensions: NS: 100 cm; EW: 110 cm; Depth: 20 cm
Discussion: Unit 16998 is at the bottom of buttress f. 5057 and includes the construction material of the lower buttress and a small amount of fill, rising ~20 cm above the floor and extending only 5-10 cm into 16998 and under 16869. The most notable feature of 16998 is a ring of plaster defining a smaller, older phase of buttress construction. Around this ring of plaster, a couple of small, thin mudbricks can be discerned. These bricks may have ringed the entire buttress between the inside and (presumed, but missing) exterior buttress, however they are disturbed by rodent burrows. The outermost ring of fill around the inner buttress may have made up the bottom of the later buttress (5057) and have been plastered. The fill has many large artifacts and a general roomfill appearance. If it was plastered, it seems to be a less than ideal surface, possibly causing the plaster to fall off. The interior of 16998 appears to be the same construction slabs as above.
