Dimensions: 5.60m (N-S) x 3.60m (E-W) 0.50m (Max thickness) 

 

Discussion: Highly burnt layer of building material. Containing human skull (18520) at north extent of deposit. Sample of burnt plaster taken as it contained a high concentration of phytoliths, <03> + <04>. These samples appear to be highly burnt plaser in which the organic material is preserved - Is this in fact mortar? Scapula < x-2 at N. extent of building.

Charcoal sample <06> taken against N. wall - possibly burnt beam that ran along top of recess on N. wall.

Skull may have been set on top of plaster capital on top of engaged pillar in the corner of excavation area. (BUT WHAT EVIDENCE?? SF) 

 

Recognition: Red colour and friable texture 

Definition: defined by wall (N+W), Extends beyond limit of excavation (S+E) 

Execution: Mattock and trowel 

Condition: Hot, Dry and dusty 

Consistency: Friable 

Colour: Burnt red 

Texture: Mudbrick, plaster, burnt mudbrick crush 

Bedding: composite 

Inclusions: occational human bone, animal bone, obsidian, stone, pottery, flint shell clay ball and worked stone. 

Post-depositional Features: occational animal burrows 

Basal Boundary: Sharp
