Interpretive Categories: Ladder scar

Data Category Information: Description: pit

Dimensions: .38 m x .49 m

Discussion: Ladder scar revealed by removing charcoal-rich clay silt fill (18669)- which proved somewhat difficult given the presence of similar mottled soil nearby. The distribution and extent of these like loams suggests the ladder hole may have undergone multiple processes of separate cutting and refilling-- as well as filling/refilling. The scar is located in the southeast corner of building 97, and given the angle of the cut (and wedged artifacts: bone and shell), it is likely that the ladder may have leaned toward the west, over the hearth to the west of the scar. It is noteworthy that the eastern wall also slopes in toward the west, possibly making use of this ladder relatively ungainly.

Recognition: Determined by removing homogenous fill (18669)

Definition: Difficult to determine initially due to surrounding deposits similar to (18669)

Execution: Removal of fill by trowel

Condition: hot

Shape: roughly ovular

Sides: slopes gently on west side, mostly vertical on south side, undercuts top break on east edge

Base Break: sharp, acute angle on east edge, most gradual on north edge

Base: deepest in southeast corner

Orientation: North-South
