Discussion: Deposit filling plaster molding - nearly rectangular deposit of yellow-brown clay loam. Edge less apparent to eastern edge-- color was more grey in color. Layer peeled off in extremely compact sheets to reveal compact, ashy, grey brown silty clay loam layer below. 18678 was largely homogenous, with little mottling, some ash inclusions, & few artifacts. It appears to be the fill of a hearth or oven, which involved the low plaster molding south of this fill, & was likely packed tightly and deliberately.

Rectangular moulding made in floor (18679) was filled with this deposit, probably to level it as fill flush with the surrounding floor.

Recognition: Clear cut along west edge: compact yellow-brown clay loam in rectangular conformation

Definition: Clear along west edge-- more gray-brown toward east but still clear

Execution: Trowel -- Came off easily in massive peds, revealing even firmer ashy clay layer below

Condition: warm, breezy

Consistency: firm

Colour: yellow-brown

Texture: clay loam, massive, flat peds

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: some charcoal , ash but mostly homogenous

Post-depositional Features:

Basal Boundary: clear , change in soil texture and colour (firm grey, mottled ashly clay loam )
