Unit 19078
Category: Layer dug in 2010
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Red hand painting
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Material: plaster; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: painted
Description: red hand paintings
Discussion: The two hands at the top of the wall might consist of two different activities/events of painting, because there are small specks of lighter red paint. Both hands have an area around the little finger that seems either disturbed or painted in a lighter red, and a circular pattern on each palm.
The hands have been consolidated, and the excavation will probably be continued next year. The condition of the red paint was very 'powderish', and it already began fading the day after it was exposed.
The hand at the west side has been truncated by an animal burrow, which has caused the destruction of the little finger.
During the 2011 season the rest of the wall plaster at that level was exposed revealing 9 more painted hands on the North wall. In the 2012 seaons an additional 3 were found on the East wall. There are a total of 13 handprints. In the 2013 season the hand to the left of there the initial two were taken was removed for conservation. The hand print just to the west of that one, had badly deteriorated and was also removed, but is a partial print. 17 August 2013 AML
The final two hands from the North wall F.3094 were removed in the 2014 season. 09/07/2014 AML
