Unit 1918
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: floors of FI
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: baked
Dimensions: est 0.8 x 0.5m x 0.5m high
Discussion: removal of walls and floors of FI 39 hard- baked burnt material. Two main levels of floors and deposits. Clay ball X1 lying directly on lower floor. Floors protrude well beyond south unit of wall 6 and into bricks of wall of adjacent building to the south. FI floors come down directly onto bricks and mortar of wall 6. NB clay ball, 1918 X1, is actually lying in fill between wall 6 and north wall of buildings to the south and then has plaster floor of FI around it - so is possible that clay ball was already in fill before construction of FI and nothing to do with hearth.
