Unit 19652
Category: Layer dug in 2011
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Timber partition
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: post
Discussion: Unit is a loose, long and thin deposit (about 10 cm thick by 1.6 m long) of very black charcoal/organic material and loose yellowish orange burned surface construction located near the 918 E line between dirty floor layers (19646) to the W and (19646) to the east. The layers of the rectangular shape thins, proximity to occupation layers and a plaster storage bin complex to the S. This deposit is dividing this western space of the building. This timber was heavily burned due to the large amount of charcoal. And degraded timber is interpreted as burned mudbrick construction possibly deposited on top of the timber in order to protect it/add stability to the construction.
On 15/08/11 unit identified as a post carved to a rectangular shape and as one of many clay packed posts in timber partition wall feature 3527. It is the southmost boxed timber post and the first one north of the round end post unit 18687. It was identified when the charcoal was clearly seen as oriented upward rather than horizontally as previously assumed. It is packed in an orange, scorched clay (19683) presumably to protect it.
Note: Archive and Flotation samples taken from mudbrick comstruction on top of the timber partition.
Recognition: clear, charcoal seen to be going vertically-cleaned up tim ber partition wall feature 3527 and identified box post
