Unit 1977

Category: cut    dug in 1997

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: grave cut,pit cut

Data Category Information: Description: burial

Dimensions: 0.35m wide x 0.40m long x0.15 m thick

Discussion: This small surviving area probably represents an earlier grave cut heavily truncated to the south and east by later burial activity. The fill [1975] contained a few disarticulated human bone fragments which may support this idea.
This cut *appears* to truncate plaster/mortar floor surface [1488].
However, the upper edge of this cut seems to have been partially excavated as the edge of the later grave cut which truncated [1975] + [ 1977] (This cut was virtually on the same alignment anyway).
This means that any clear stratigraphic relationship between the cut and the floor surfaces in the NW corner of space 71 has been lost.
Though this cut probably predates the later inhumation activity, Gavin wants [1975] + [1977] to be grouped with burial 38, the later stratigraphic episode.
