Unit 20083
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Remnant Superstructure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Layer is a friable remnant patch of hearth superstructure located to the N of the S edge of F. 7402. It does not continue around the entire edge of the hearth, and seems to have been dug out on other sides in antiquity.
Discussion: Unit was identified on the S. edge of the hearth after superstructure layer U. 20077 was removed in this area. U. 20083 is different due to the appearance of more charcoal in the layer, and a clear division between the two layers visible in the S. profile (inner) of the hearth. Throughout the excavation of the 2 hearth phases (F. 3436 and F. 7402) it appears as thought this S. edge was packed higher with thicker superstructures, therefore this layer may have served as a superstructure/construction packing layer to build up the hearth on this side and maintain the shape when the hearth was remodeled and added to.
