Unit 20086
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Hearth Superstructure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Layer is a hearth superstructure construction within F. 7402 composed of burnt baked orangey clay. It laps up onto U. 20078 on the edges and is underneath associated floors U. 20085.
Discussion: This layer was first visible as the latest levels of the hearth (F. 3436) were being excavated, but it was only after the removal of the superstructure levels before the new hearth F. 7402 (U. 20075 and U. 20077) and the following eroded hearth floors were removed (U. 20081 and U. 20085) that the full extent of U. 20086 was revealed. It seems as though after the phase of the hearth directly associated with the plaster edge, the inhabitants built a smaller orange clay hearth within F 7402, possibly for temporary use or to serve as a smaller hearth to suit a phase of less activity or production.
