Interpretive Categories: Burned Dump

Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: homogeneous

Description: Initially interpreted as a continuation of the fire installation that was just to the east in 2002 (U.6217 and 6234). Now thought to be associated with post burning/removal.

Discussion: This is a burned concentration (fire spot) that was located in the approximately approprate location of the redeposited fire installation (unit 6217 and 6234) that was identified in the 2002 excavation of Space 87. The fill was characterized by blackened, burned soil made up of clay, silt, sand, with concentrations of ashy, charcoal, burned brick, rock and plaster and the interesting placement of two horn cores, one still attatched to a partial skull (probably auroch), at the center of the activity area. X-1 was particularly well-preserved. Unlike the fire installation in the east (from 2002), this unit had no clear boundaries and was not demarcated by architectural features (brick, plaster etc). It is distinct from 20404 infill by the degree of the burning. In hindsight, this unit may most likely have been a phenomenon of post removal/burning. We identified a post scar on the south wall only after this unit was excavated, but the two correspond spatially…
