Unit 20499
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: false brick bottom
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature
Discussion: This false brick bottom came below about 0.5 m of fill placed above it (U. 20480). The bricks consisted of somewhere between 2 and 3 courses of gray brick that crumbled very easily upon excavation. There did not appear to be any mortar. The center of the brick layer had collapsed inward, probably due to the decomposition of the coffin containing the skeleton (Sk. 19569) in the fill (U. 19568) below it. One possible explanation for the false brick bottom is to protect the skeleton and the burial goods from easy access by looters. This makes sense in light of the finding of burial goods that included fine glass vessels, ceramic vessels and several fine pieces of carved bone (perhaps ivory).
