Unit 20808

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: Plaster layer in burial

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Material: plaster; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: unpainted

Discussion: The plaster layer is spread in the burial pit and somewhat smeared over the edge in the east "corner". It seems to be missing southeast of the human hip bone which is still showing. Has the plaster been removed here or was it never smeared there? The layer is partly thicker than earlier plaster layers in the pit and wheras its upper interface towards u.20805 had smooth slopes towards the lower middle, the interface towards underlaying layer u.20809 is more steep, at least in the western part.

The piece of shell was found on the surface of the layer where it was smeared out towards the east (see unit sheet sketch). The layer above here had been removed last season (2012, when F.7001 was excavated) and it was more more difficult to understand the stratigraphical relationship between the two features and the platform here.

The border between the cut of F.7001 and that of F.7003 is difficult to see at this level.

The layer was removed by trowel.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
