Unit 20844
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Compound floor layers of plaster and makeup
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This compound layer is actually mainly defined by the underlying stratigraphy. Previous excavation has stopped arbitrarily at various stratigraphic levels over the western floor. What I have done now is to take off patches of layer down to a common stratigraphic level (which is a thin plaster on thick makeup, followed by thick plaster in the whole, it seems, western part of the building).
Above F. 7013 was only quite thick makeup, the lowest part of u. 20844, so the stratigraphic connection is clear.
Consistency: Firm to friable
Colour: White/light beige and medium brown
Texture: Silt
Bedding: Compound
Inclusions: Charcoal flecks < 1 %
Post-depositional Features: Worn more on certain surfaces. Very deep and severe cracks over the whole surface. Layers crumbling.
Basal Boundary: In some parts of the surface the basal boundary is clear towards underlying plaster and features (i.e. F. 7013), but in many places it is more difficult to discern.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
