Unit 20911
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Dump element
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was a dump element beneath ashy layer u20622. It was recognized as a quite homogenous layer of silt with inclusions of pure clay. It was homogenous in comparison with u20481, room fill, which it otherwise was somewhat similar to. It was excavated with trowel.
This unit seems to represent a dump element connected to the filling/closing of the this building (102). Upon this, ashy layer u20622 and burial F3691 was laid. Perhaps it was made or deposited to also level up the floor with the base for F3688, with which this unit was physically lined with. However it was not in the same level as it, so this is just speculation. This unit was packed but smooth so it might still have been used for "preparing" the entrance for burial and closure. (?)
Consistency: Compact and pressed down.
Colour: Yellowish brown, orange flecks of clay
Texture: Silt and clay
Bedding: Layered with clay lenses
Inclusions: Medium sized pure clay inclusions.
Post-depositional Features: Animal furrowing
Basal Boundary: Clear and abrupt. Floor 20909 was beneath it.
