Unit 21212
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: charcoal lens in association w/ clay ball cluster
Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: Unit 21212 was first identified by the border of burned clay which surrounded the thin/ slightly delicate lens of charcoal. As the lens was excavated further it became clear that this deposit was most likely burned in situ (given the copious amounts of burned clay both directly underneath the lens and along its periphery) and in combination with its undefined shape and relatively shallow basal boundary it seemed this "fire spot" was created ad hoc, indicating it was most likely only used once. This single use activity scenario is the perfect context for bayesian statistical dating so the unit was extracted as a charcoal sample and given to Alex Bayless for her statistical dating program.
Consistency: soft- ashy fill with a silty loam matrix
Colour: black mottled with white/ reddish brown- black ashy fill mottled with fine white plaster and a border of reddish brown clay along the stain's periphery
Texture: silty loam/ clay- ashy fill is predominately charcoal with a silty loam matrix but the strat its laying on top of pure clay
Bedding: massive- even mixing of charcoal and plaster
Inclusions: plaster
Post-depositional Features: -
Basal Boundary: arbitrary- created by laying material on top of dirty floor and burning in situ

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
