Unit 21213
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: white plaster "platform"
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: plaster; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: This plaster platform was first exposed after meticulously excavating the area which surrounded our clay ball cluster (u. 21208) as we assumed there would be more clay balls within the vicinity. After fully exposing the four balls that comprised our cluster we encountered an extremely cohesive/ dense platform which, after it was gently scraped, revealed a bright white lens of plaster. Further excavation to expose the extant limits of this layer admonished that this platform was comprised of just a single delicate layer of white plaster and was constructed half on packed light reddish brown infill (western portion) and half on top of our dirty floor (u. 20543- eastern portion) placing it stratigraphically above that floor. This platform has not been excavated, no samples have been taken except for three phytolith samples taken from the mold or imprint of the clay ball cluster (u. 21208) after it was removed.
Consistency: compact- layered plaster has very compact/ cohesive structure
Colour: white- bright white color clearly distinguishes platform from dirty floor
Texture: compact silty loam- white plaster is a fine silty loam but the lime marl used in its production gives it a naturally gritty texture
Bedding: massive- platform appears to be defined by a single extremely thin layer of white plaster
Inclusions: none
Post-depositional Features: -
Basal Boundary: arbitrary- plaster platform created by covering packed infill with white plaster which has a natural/ wavy surface
