Unit 21528

Category: Cut    dug in 2014

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Cut of burial pit in south-central part of space

Data Category Information: Description: burial

Discussion: Burial cut under sequence of grey plaster floors and next to S wall os Sp.87. The top of a human cranium is visible. Unit not yet excavated.

Added in 2015:
Cut for burial pit containing an adult female skeleton and an infant placed on her chest. Rather shallow, so possibly the skeletons did not have much flesh on them by the time they were buried. From the top this burial cut seemed to be much larger than it actually is, extending towards the N. This was due to the homogeneously heterogeneous infill material and the difficulty in defining the S edge of the cut, which resulted to be immediately by the S wall, with the walls of the edge undercutting below it. There is no wall plaster on top of this pit, and it is likely that it was truncated in the Neolithic during the excavation of the burial pits.
During excavation we resolved that the N part of what we thought was U.21528 was in fact another cut (a cut truncating another cut), shallower and probably later than the current unit. As a result, both infills have been mixed, constituting U.21527.
Floor sequences are visible towards the top of the burial pit section with the exception of the W section, where a sequence of what appears to be baked floors (in situ) has been identified and sampled for micromorphology. It is hypothesised that this was an earlier fire installation that was later heavily truncated.
