Unit 21769
Category: Cut dug in 2015
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Burial cut
Data Category Information: Description: burial
Discussion: This is the cut of a double primary burial F. 7407 situated in the northern edge of the main platform (F. 3440). It was first identified in plan by a difference in color and in consistency of the soil from the infill, which was brown and looser than the series of make-up and plaster composing the main platform.
This cut was first thought to have a circular/oval shape in plan when the first skeleton (of a juvenile) was uncovered (U.21776). However, when a second individual (a neonate, U.21779) was identified in the northwestern edge of the cut, we started questioning whether there was one single interment event or, instead, two different deposits. Moreover, the boundaries of the cut towards south remained unclear during the whole process of excavation, so it was inferred that the infill containing the juvenile could be truncating a previous burial – the one containing the neonate.
After lifting the remains of the juvenile, we kept on tracing the layers of plaster that would define the boundaries of the cut (a few centimeters from the surface) by digging the section towards south. As the borders were found, the soil excavated in this southern portion of the cut was interpreted as burial infill, and it made more sense to understand the feature as one burial event containing two skeletons.
