Unit 2204
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Building fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This unit was excavated as a very shallow arbitrary level since it seems to leads to a hard bricky layer almost immediately, A baulk is left at first to protect the plaster inner surface of the north and east walls of space 86 and a possible relief abutting the north wall in this unit.
1998. Anne Marie
The first intentions for this unit were to determine if the stripey patterns in the "roof" deposites-directly adjoining this unit, would be seen continuing in this unit. This was not the case, but instead we found out that there were more distinctive deposits in the N end of the unit. While the material in the S end was very crumbly and loose, quite easy to trowel through, as I moved North the deposites became more firm and more distinctive-mud brick can be discerned from mortar. Patterns of mudbrick and mortar can be seen in plan, but not well enough (for this excavator) to reconstruct what is going on. In addition, plaster chunks (20-30 cm) became more common as you approach N end of the unit. As rubble, mortar and mudbrick are removed, peeled away from plaster, we see a hudge plaster lump in this N end.
Note: two pairs of samples (flot. and archive) are taken under same numbers but different coordinates in 1997 and 1998.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Moderate size unit coming from building fill of space 86. Arbitrary layer, roots, plaster, mudbrick, mortar. insecure context. Dry sieve volume 500. Mostly sheep size, but a fair amount of Bos size, mostly long bones splinters, 10% burnt. ID: Ovis/Capra 2 mandible fragments, one large Ovis (?wild) astragalus, postcranial, one micromammal. All body parts present, especially long bones. Fairly fragmented, but includes moderately large pieces. Poor surface condition due to proximity to ground surface. A bit of bird and microfauna (amphibian). Looks like somewhat mixed post-consumption discard. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, only diagnostics recorded, rest as flot frags. May be from a pocket in the deposit. it is rather small and lacks the larger fragments from the dry sieve. it also has perhaps a bit more burning. A little bit of fish and microfauna (amphibian) pulled. There seems to be another Sample 1 from 1998 (first from 1997); 100% sorted, recorded only as flot frags (no diagnostics). This one is also small, but does have the larger (up to ca. 4 cm) pieces. This is F120. Last number = 120Figurine Records: Yes
